【Course Purpose and Description】 |
This course is designed for students with no or some background in Japanese (TJ1-TJ2). The goal for this semester is to understand Japanese culture and society through experiential learning. In each class, students will participate in discussions on various topics related to Japanese culture and society such as religions, lifestyles and traditional culture. This course is conducted in English and simple Japanese. |

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1) better understand Japan and its people 2) experience Japanese culture 3) connect and actively participate in communities |

Week 1: Introduction / Culture Week 2: Shintoism and others 1 Week 3: Shintoism and others 2 (Field trip) Week 4: Animism inside Japanese Animation Week 5: Modern lifestyle Week 6: Traditional lifestyle 1 Week 7: Traditional lifestyle 2 (Field trip) Week 8: Traditional dance and music Week 9: Japanese food Week 10: Japanese Education System Week 11: Students` presentation on Japanese culture and society Week 12: Students` presentation (cont.) *Students must always bring their Account Sheet (the paper on which their ID and password are printed which was handed to them at the Orientation upon their arrival) to every class. * This schedule is subject to change. |
【Instructional Methods】 |
Since the purpose of this course is experiential learning, various activities such as filed trips, discussions, and demonstrations will be arranged though out this course. |
【Self-study before/after classes】 |
Students are expected to reflect their cultural experiences and submit their papers. |
【Methods of Evaluation and Grading Criteria】 |
Presentation: 20% Reflective Papers: 45% Tasks: 15% Attendance & Performance: 20% 【Grading Criteria】 Grading conforms to Toyo university’s grading standard. |

Integrated Japanese I & II or equivalent. |
