【Sub-title】

【Course Purpose and Description】

This course is designed for students with no or little background in Japanese (TJ1-TJ2). The goal of this semester is to develop a basic interaction ability to communicate in Japanese through various projects. In each class, students will learn Japanese through experiences by utilizing various resourced both inside and outside of classroom. Based on their individual interests, students decide topics, collect information, present them and short papers in Japanese. Therefore, this course requires students' autonomy and creativity in order to participate in each task.

【Learning Objectives】

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1) Acquire basic knowledge of Japanese grammar
2) Collect information they need
3) Write short report in Japanese

Week1 Orientation / Self-introduction
Week2 Project01 (individual) : Introducing your hometown (1) How to write on PC in Japanese
Week3 Project01 (individual) : Introducing your hometown (2) choose the topic and write a rough draft
Week4 Project01 (individual) : Introducing your hometown (3) make a collage and give a presentation in class
Week5 Project02 (pair) : Something You found in Toyo (1) choose the topic and take pictures on campus
Week6 Project02 (pair) : Something You found in Toyo (2) write a rough draft about the pictures
Week7 Project02 (pair) : Something You found in Toyo (3) make a poster and give a presentation in class
Week8 Project03 (pair) : Something You found in Toyo (4) write a short report about the presentation

【Instructional Methods】

Japanese language is used for the instruction of this course. Students are expected to utilize their four skills (speaking, listening, writing and reading) to accomplish all projects.


This class is a combination of face-to-face and non-face-to-face classes. When non-face-to-face classes are conducted, a combination of distance learning (simultaneous bidirectional class) and assignment delivery learning (on-demand class) is conducted. Distribution of lesson materials and lectures will be conducted using ToyoNet-Ace, Webex Meetings, YouTube, Google, PDF files, Word files, and PowerPoint files. Questions and answers will be held at ToyoNet-Ace and Webex Teams, and real-time discussions will be held at Webex Meetings.

【Self-study before/after classes】

Before class, students are expected to have some ideas of each project. (approx.30 min)
After class, students are expected to:
1) collect information they need
2) prepare for the next task (approx.1 hour)
Homework is submitted to the following class day.

【Methods of Evaluation and Grading Criteria】

Achievement of the projects: 50%
Attendance & Class performance: 50%
