【Sub-title】

【Course Purpose and Description】

This course is designed for people with some background in Japanese (TJ2-TJ3). The goal of this semester is to develop a basic interaction ability to communicate in Japanese through various projects. In each class, student will learn Japanese through experiences by utilizing various resources both inside and outside of classroom. Based on their individual interests, students decide topics, collect information, present them and write short papers in Japanese. Therefore, this course requires students` autonomy and creativity in order to participate in each task.

【Learning Objectives】

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1) Acquire elementary knowledge of Japanese grammar
2) Collect information they need
3) Write short report in Japanese

【Schedule】

Week 1: Course Orientation, Self-introduction, Choice of topics
Weeks 2-4: Project 1 (Topic 1)
1) Preparation for the presentation
2) Presentation and peer-review + evaluation + report/rewrite
Weeks 5-9: Project 2 (Topic 2) Field research
1) Preparation for field research
2) Preparation for the presentation
3) Presentation and peer-review + evaluation + report/rewrite
Weeks 10-15 Final project
1) Topic choice + discussion + activity report
2) Peer-review of the report + preparation for the presentation
3) preparation for the presentation
4) Presentation + peer-review
5) Project evaluation + report (+ closing speech)

【Instructional Methods】

Japanese language is used for the instruction of this course. Students are expected to utilize their four skills (speaking, listening, writing and reading) to accomplish all projects.


This class is a combination of face-to-face and non-face-to-face classes. When non-face-to-face classes are conducted, a combination of distance learning (simultaneous bidirectional class) and assignment delivery learning (on-demand class) is conducted. Distribution of lesson materials and lectures will be conducted using ToyoNet-Ace, Webex Meetings, YouTube, Google, PDF files, Word files, and PowerPoint files. Questions and answers will be held at ToyoNet-Ace and Webex Teams, and real-time discussions will be held at Webex Meetings.

【Self-study before/after classes】

Before class, students are expected to have some ideas of each project. (approx.30 min)
After class, students are expected to:
1) collect information they need
2) prepare for the next task (approx.1 hour)
Homework is submitted to the following class day.

【Methods of Evaluation and Grading Criteria】

Achievement of the projects: 50%
Attendance & Class performance: 50%
