Regional Analysis as a Basis for the Preparation of Master's Thesis and Research Thesis on Special Subjects

【Course Purpose and Description】

As the depopulation of the region is drawing much attention and the need for regional revitalization is being called for, it is extremely important to grasp regional trends from a multifaceted perspective, and necessary measures can be derived through regional analysis. In particular, regional analysis is an important basis for making specific policy recommendations for specific regions in master's theses.
It is a misconception that the policy can be guided without conducting a regional analysis because there is a recognition that "The people who live in the area know the area best.". Through objective regional analysis, it is possible to clarify the reality of a region that has been overlooked, and to link it to highly original and effective policy proposals.
In this course, students will learn how to introduce and analyze data, focusing on regional population trends, commuting, industrial structure, vacant houses, public facilities, and financial conditions.
In particular, the Regional Economic Analysis System (RESAS) has been developed as a means to promote regional revitalization, making analysis much easier. Therefore, we will conduct analysis making the best use of RESAS as much as possible. However, since the degree of freedom of data processing in RESAS is low and some data cannot be analyzed by RESAS alone, conventional data acquisition methods and data not available in RESAS will also be introduced.
In addition, it introduces how to have a unique viewpoint necessary for analysis, methods to avoid common misunderstandings, etc., and also provides hints for creating originality without ending with a mechanical regional analysis.
In the latter half of the lecture, the students will conduct their own regional analysis and use the results as a basis for their master's thesis and research paper on specific subjects.

【Learning Objectives】

Acquire basic methods of analysis (Population, industry, finance, etc.) based on awareness of local issues. Through objective analysis of data and unique analysis perspectives, it is possible to identify areas and issues that have not been seen before.

【Schedule】

15 Review and Summary
*With the development of the regional economic analysis system RESAS, analysis has become much easier. Therefore, the analysis using RESAS is carried out as much as possible. However, when RESAS is not available, or when statistical data is used directly for deeper analysis, an analysis method is briefly introduced.
*The schedule may be adjusted according to the number of participants.

【Instructional Methods】

Lecture format is the basis for the 1st to the 11 and the 15 lectures. In the 12 to 14 sessions, students are asked to present their analysis results and all participants discuss them.
In the second to fifth sessions, each participant is required to bring his or her own laptop PC because he or she is going to practice running RESAS by himself or herself. Remote users can use remote PCs.

【Self-study before/after classes】

Read the material published in manaba in advance, and prepare the awareness of each practice or activity regarding the analysis presented (30 minutes).
In addition, the statistics introduced in the lecture materials are acquired on the website, etc. (60 minutes).
In the 12 through 14 sessions, students will be asked to present their analysis, so after each lecture, students will conduct their own analysis and prepare for the presentation. Adult graduate students are encouraged to make use of their actual working hours (90 minutes).

【Methods of Evaluation and Grading Criteria】

Based on the content of the analysis by the students (Comprehensive evaluation of problem awareness, accuracy of analysis, originality, and potential for future development). Out of 90 points or more, S shall be within 5% of the students taking the course. A shall be 80 points or higher, B shall be 70 points or higher, C shall be 60 points or higher and less than 60 points shall be rejected.

【Pre-requisites】

Although there are no specific courses, it is desirable to take related courses on how to use RESAS.

【Textbooks】

The material is published in manaba in advance.
