【Course Purpose and Description】 |
This course is designed for students with no background in Japanese language (TJ1). In the theory class, students will acquire basic knowledge of vocabularies and grammar structures through drills based on the textbook. The goal for this semester is to develop basic skills of reading and writing Japanese. In each class, students will participate in various activities such as reading short texts and writing short essays. * It is recommended that students should take this class and JFB (Practice) class together. |
【Learning Objectives】 |
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1) understand basic vocabularies and grammar structures. 2) understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters. 3) produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. |
【Schedule】 |
This course covers Lessons 1 to 7 of "Tobira (elementary)". Week 1: Orientation, Survival Japanese Week 2: Lessons 1 (introduce yourself) Week 3-4: Lessons 1-2 (Do you want to go to rock festival?) Week 5-6: Lessons 2-3 (I didn’t eat any ramen.) Week 7-8: Lesson 3 (Demonstratives) Week 9-10: Lesson 4 (I, too, would like to eat Takoyaki, please!) Week 11-12: Lessons 4-5 (Where is Nyantaro?) Week 13: Lesson 5-6 (We are all looking for him now.) Week 14: Lessons 6-7 (I want more free time.) Week 15: Lesson 7 (Review) * This schedule is subject to change. |
【Instructional Methods】 |
Various activities will be arranged in each class for improving skills of reading and writing.. Students are encouraged to undertake “autonomous learning” to achieve personal goals. As for the progress and contents of this course, they may be flexibly adjusted depending on the learning environment. |
【Self-study before/after classes】 |
Before-class: Students are expected to 1) memorize vocabulary so that they can participate fully in classroom activities every single day, and 2) listen to the audio material. After-class: Students are expected to 1) review the material covered in the class, 2) complete homework assignments, and 3) go over quizzes to see what was corrected. |
【Methods of Evaluation and Grading Criteria】 |
Review Tests (x3) : 45% Quizzes (Vocabulary): 25% Assignments: 20% Attendance & Class performance: 10% 【Grading Criteria】 Grading conforms to Toyo university’s grading standard. |
【Pre-requisites】 |
Students are required to master readings of Hiragana and Katakana before the class starts. |
