【Course Purpose and Description】 |
This course is designed for students with some background in Japanese language (TJ2). In the practice class, students will acquire basic skills for using Japanese based on the communicative activities. The goal for this semester is to develop skills of speaking and listening, using upper-elementary Japanese. In each class, students will participate in various activities such as conversation practice and speaking tasks about given topics. * It is recommended that students should take this class and INT1 (Theory) class together. |
【Learning Objectives】 |
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1) carry out basic conversation, using upper-elementary Japanese. 2) understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters. 3) produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. |

This course covers Lessons 1 through 18 of "Marugoto : Japanese Language and Culture Elementary 2" Week 1: Orientation, Review (verb te form, dic form and adjectives) Week 2: Lessons 1-2 (New friends) Week 3-4: Lessons 3-4 (Eating out) Week 5-6: Lessons 5-6 (Okinawa trip) Week 7-8: Lessons 7-8 (Japan Festival) Week 9-10: Lessons 9-10 (Special Days) Week 11-12: Lessons 11-12 (Online shopping) Week 13: Lessons 13-14 (A town rich in history and culture) Week 14: Lessons 15-16 (Life and eco-friendly activities) Week 15: Lessons 17-18 (People’s lives) * This schedule is subject to change. |
【Instructional Methods】 |
This class is a combination of face-to-face and non-face-to-face classes. When non-face-to-face classes are conducted, a combination of distance learning (simultaneous bidirectional class) and assignment delivery learning (on-demand class) is conducted. Distribution of lesson materials and lectures will be conducted using ToyoNet-Ace, Webex Meetings, YouTube, Google, PDF files, Word files, and PowerPoint files. Questions and answers will be held at ToyoNet-Ace and Webex Teams, and real-time discussions will be held at Webex Meetings.
Various activities will be arranged in each class for improving skills of listening and speaking. Students are encouraged to undertake “autonomous learning” to achieve personal goals. As for the progress and contents of this course, they may be flexibly adjusted depending on the learning environment. |
【Self-study before/after classes】 |
Before-class: Students are expected to 1) memorize vocabulary so that they can participate fully in classroom activities every single day, and 2) listen to the audio material. After-class: Students are expected to 1) review the material covered in the class, 2) complete homework assignments, and 3) go over quizzes to see what was corrected.
For advanced learning (1 hour), follow the lecture schedule and carefully review the terminology, summarize your thoughts, and prepare for the class. In the post-course study (1 hour), please review the handouts and other materials used in the class. Also, please use the reference materials introduced in the class to expand your knowledge.Please actively participate in the class. If you have any assignments or presentations, please submit or prepare them by the deadline. |

Review Tests (x3) : 45% Quizzes (Vocabulary): 25% Assignments: 20% Attendance & Class performance: 10% 【Grading Criteria】 Grading conforms to Toyo university’s grading standard. |
【Pre-requisites】 |
Students are required to understand basic verb conjugations such as te form and dictionary form. |
