【Sub-title】

【Course Purpose and Description】

The course is designed for students with elementary level background in Japanese language (TJ2-TJ3). In each class, students will acquire an upper-elementary knowledge of Japanese vocabulary and compositional structures necessary in their daily and academic life through intensive reading and composition activities.
Aims (Reading):
- to acquire an upper-elementary level knowledge of the Japanese sentence and text structure
Aims (Composition):
- to review and practice the vocabulary and grammar patterns previously learned
- to acquire vocabulary and grammar patterns necessary for the comprehension of more complex texts

【Learning Objectives】

By the end of the semester, students should be able to:
1) Participate in daily conversations on familiar topics and express their thoughts using Japanese
2) Acquire enough of a vocabulary and compositional structures so as to allow them to speak and write about their ideas and thoughts on daily topics

【Instructional Methods】

Peer activities and feedback will be strongly encouraged
Examples of activities:
1. Pre-reading activities: brainstorming, pre-discussion of topics, clarification of vocabulary and grammar items
2. Reading activities using different strategies: rapid reading, careful reading, jigsaw-reading etc.
3. Post-reading/pre-composition activities and comprehension checking, discussions, examination of writing models etc.
4. Composition activities
5. Formative assessments: outlines, journal entries, feedback sheets etc.
6. Peer editing and evaluation activities: presentations, feedback sheets/sessions etc.

This class is a combination of face-to-face and non-face-to-face classes. When non-face-to-face classes are conducted, a combination of distance learning (simultaneous bidirectional class) and assignment delivery learning (on-demand class) is conducted. Distribution of lesson materials and lectures will be conducted using ToyoNet-Ace, Webex Meetings, YouTube, Google, PDF files, Word files, and PowerPoint files. Questions and answers will be held at ToyoNet-Ace and Webex Teams, and real-time discussions will be held at Webex Meetings.

【Self-study before/after classes】

・ Before the class: Students are expected to look up unknown vocabulary and review the grammar.
・ After the class: Students are expected to complete their assignments and submit them in a timely manner.

For advanced learning (1 hour), follow the lecture schedule and carefully review the terminology, summarize your thoughts, and prepare for the class. In the post-course study (1 hour), please review the handouts and other materials used in the class. Also, please use the reference materials introduced in the class to expand your knowledge.
Please actively participate in the class. If you have any assignments or presentations, please submit or prepare them by the deadline.
