【Sub-title】

【Course Purpose and Description】

This course is designed for students with an intermediate level background in Japanese (TJ3-TJ4). The goal for this semester is to improve their skills for reading the texts in a variety of categories and to nurture ability of writing logical sentences. In each class, while necessary strategies in mind, students read logical texts and acquire formal vocabularies, sentence patterns, and sentence structures, which are necessary for academic studies.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1) read logical texts.
2) write formal and academic sentences which will be necessary for studying at university.
3) increase vocabulary by reading and writing.

【Instructional Methods】

Approximately half the time of class is allocated to reading comprehension and composition
Reading: Before reading, students will discuss concerning topics to help understanding.
Students will use the reading techniques of skimming and scanning depending of purpose first, and next read carefully if necessary.
Composition: Students will learn expressions, grammar, writing style, etc. which are necessary for composition and also will do writing activities including assignments of composition.
A quiz will be given every week.

This class is a combination of face-to-face and non-face-to-face classes. When non-face-to-face classes are conducted, a combination of distance learning (simultaneous bidirectional class) and assignment delivery learning (on-demand class) is conducted. Distribution of lesson materials and lectures will be conducted using ToyoNet-Ace, Webex Meetings, YouTube, Google, PDF files, Word files, and PowerPoint files. Questions and answers will be held at ToyoNet-Ace and Webex Teams, and real-time discussions will be held at Webex Meetings.

【Self-study before/after classes】

Before class: students are expected to look up the meaning of the words in the textbook.
After class: students are expected to complete the assignments and are expected to review what was done in class.

For advanced learning (1 hour), follow the lecture schedule and carefully review the terminology, summarize your thoughts, and prepare for the class. In the post-course study (1 hour), please review the handouts and other materials used in the class. Also, please use the reference materials introduced in the class to expand your knowledge.
Please actively participate in the class. If you have any assignments or presentations, please submit or prepare them by the deadline.
