【Sub-title】

【Course Purpose and Description】

This course is designed for people with an early intermediate-level background in Japanese (TJ3-TJ4). The goal for this semester is to study Kanji, which is indispensable to understanding the Japanese language, and to acquire Kanji literacy which enables you to understand vocabularies used in campus life. In each class, you will study other Kanji and idioms, or basic knowledge about Kanji which are regarded necessary in the daily life in Japan, other than basic Kanji in the textbook.

【Learning Objectives】

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1) learn approximate 130 new Kanji and 500 vocabularies.
2) understand the meaning of each Kanji one by one, while enabling them to write and read those Kanji quite correctly.
3) acquire knowledge related to Kanji, such as the historical process of Kanji formation and its radicals.
4) understand not merely reading and writing of Kanji but understand how Kanji is used as vocabulary in sentences and discourses while getting accustomed to using Kanji such as composing phrases and sentences with Kanji.

【Instructional Methods】

Students practice introduced Kanji through various tasks such as reading short texts, writing messages, and playing Kanji games.
Japanese language is used for the instruction of this course.

This class is a combination of face-to-face and non-face-to-face classes. When non-face-to-face classes are conducted, a combination of distance learning (simultaneous bidirectional class) and assignment delivery learning (on-demand class) is conducted. Distribution of lesson materials and lectures will be conducted using ToyoNet-Ace, Webex Meetings, YouTube, Google, PDF files, Word files, and PowerPoint files. Questions and answers will be held at ToyoNet-Ace and Webex Teams, and real-time discussions will be held at Webex Meetings.

【Self-study before/after classes】

Before class, students are expected to:
1) Read the kanji that will be covered in the class.
2) Memorize the meaning of each kanji so that they can participate fully in classroom activities.
After class, students are expected to:
1) Review the kanji covered in the class and make sure they can read and write them correctly without looking at the textbook.
2) Complete homework assignments.

For advanced learning (1 hour), follow the lecture schedule and carefully review the terminology, summarize your thoughts, and prepare for the class. In the post-course study (1 hour), please review the handouts and other materials used in the class. Also, please use the reference materials introduced in the class to expand your knowledge.
Please actively participate in the class. If you have any assignments or presentations, please submit or prepare them by the deadline.
3) Prepare for quizzes.

Review Test: 45%
Quizzes: 15%
Homework: 30%
Class Performance (including Class Participation): 10%
Grading conforms to Toyo university’s grading standard.

Japanese Writing Ⅱ or equivalent.
