【Sub-title】

Seminar for Thesis and Dissertation Writers

【Course Purpose and Description】

The expectations for this course are high. You must stay up to date with assignments and be active in your research, as detailed below. If this is not possible, you should not enroll.
[1] Preparation: Weekly class preparation includes: reading of all texts, completion of activities, completion of weekly assignments, and regular progress on your research.[2] Attendance: Classes start promptly at the stated time, while absences are particularly disrupting and will only be excused with instructor notification. Absences must be for reasons such as serious illness or family emergencies. If you anticipate many absences, do not enroll in the class.[3] Participation: The manner in which you participate with other students is important. Discussion must be respectful, inquiry-based, and must not include unhelpful criticism. The goal is a classroom where having different ideas is supported, while ideas are examined thoughtfully.

【Learning Objectives】

By the end of this spring seminar, students are expected to:
(1) set the research question(s)
(2) choose their research methodology(ies)
(3) complete the literature review
In addition, complete the first draft of their Master’s thesis, if you are a second year Master’s student.

【Schedule】

I. This seminar class facilitates intensive focus on thesis writing, working on your interests regarding Public Private Partnerships (PPP) and other related areas.

II. In the first class, students will present their research interest as well as an outline of the schedule for their Master’s thesis.

III. The instructor will ask you about the research methods that you are planning to use, for example, quantitative, qualitative, legal, or experimental methods.

(Seminar2)-(Seminar13): Continuation from former Presentation

(Seminar14): An oral defense of your research

(Seminar15): Final presentation: Presentation by students on their accomplishments

【Instructional Methods】

This seminar will be a student-centered learning seminar. Students will not only be active learners but also active participants. Methods for conducting a literature review/Master thesis analysis will be presented by the instructor. Students are required to proceed with their research every week and inform their progress in the seminars.

【Self-study before/after classes】

For weekly preparation, read through all assigned articles. You are required to proceed with the writing of your literature review/draft of Master’s thesis after each seminar.

【Methods of Evaluation and Grading Criteria】

Class participation and in-class contribution: 30%
Reports and assigned tasks: 40%
An oral defense of your research: 30%

Weekly class preparation includes: reading of all texts, completion of activities, completion of weekly assignments, and regular progress on your research.
