【Sub-title】

【Course Purpose and Description】

This course is designed for students with no background in Japanese language(TJ1). In the practice class, students will acquire basic skill of using Japanese based on the communicative activities. The goal for this semester is to develop basic skills of speaking and listening Japanese in actual context. In each class, students will participate in various activities such as conversation practice and speaking tasks about given topics.
* It is recommended that students should take this class and JFB (Theory) class together.

【Learning Objectives】

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1) carry out basic conversation in Japanese.
2) understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters.
3) produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.

【Schedule】

This course covers Lessons 1 through 18 of "Marugoto : Japanese Language and Culture Starter"
Week 1: Orientation, Survival Japanese
Week 2: Lessons 3 (Nice to meet you)
Week 3-4: Lessons 3-4 (family members)
Week 5-6: Lessons 5-6 (What kind of food do you like?)
Week 7-8: Lessons 7-8 (There are three rooms in my home.)
Week 9-10: Lessons 9-10 (What time do you get up?)
Week 11-12: Lessons 11-12 (What is your hobby?)
Week 13: Lessons 13-14 (How are you going to get there?)
Week 14: Lessons 15-16 (Talking about what you want to buy)
Week 15: Lessons 17-18 (What did you do on your days off?)

【Instructional Methods】

Various activities will be arranged in each class for improving skills of listening and speaking. Students are encouraged to undertake “autonomous learning” to achieve personal goals. As for the progress and contents of this course, they may be flexibly adjusted depending on the learning environment.

【Self-study before/after classes】

Before-class:
Students are expected to 1) memorize vocabulary so that they can participate fully in classroom activities every single day, and 2) listen to the audio material.
After-class:
Students are expected to 1) review the material covered in the class, 2) complete homework assignments, and 3) go over quizzes to see what was corrected.

【Methods of Evaluation and Grading Criteria】

Review Tests (x3) : 45%
Quizzes (Vocabulary): 25%
Assignments: 20%
Attendance & Class performance: 10%
【Grading Criteria】
Grading conforms to Toyo university’s grading standard.

【Pre-requisites】

Students are required to master readings of Hiragana and Katakana before class starts.
