The basics of public finance and the characteristics of Japanese fiscal policy

【Course Purpose and Description】

The purpose of this course is to learn about Japan’s financial system and how various policies (regulations, taxation policies, social security policies, etc.) affect society through market reactions. Through this course, we aim to deepen our understanding of the positive and negative effects of various policies on the economy.

【Learning Objectives】

The first goal is to understand the current state of Japanese finances after gaining knowledge of the institutional mechanism of finances. On top of that, the ultimate goal is to be able to evaluate policies from the perspective of economics.

【Instructional Methods】

This course will take the form of a conventional sminar.

【Self-study before/after classes】

Submission of proposals will be requested as appropriate. It is preferable to study before and after class for 60 minutes each using the textbooks and handouts.

【Methods of Evaluation and Grading Criteria】

Grades will be based mainly on the class activities (about 60%), and term paper will be included (about 40%).

【Pre-requisites】

It is not obligatory but preferable to have knowledge of Microeconomics.
