【Sub-title】

Understanding the challenges of the Japanese economy and fiscal affairs through indicaters used in Goverment Monthly Economic Report and the System of National Accounts (especially Public Finance).

【Course Purpose and Description】

By explaining how to use and make economic and fiscal indicators mainly focusing on indicators used in Government Monthly Economic Report and the System of National Accounts (SNA), acquire the foundation to utilize economic indicators and study the challenges of the Japanese economy and fiscal affairs.
The influence of COVID-19 to economy and policy response to it are explained, including the overview in the first lecture.
Indicators of prefectures and cities are also explained, if exist.

【Learning Objectives】

To be able to fully utilize economic and fisal indicators related to the Japanese economy and fiscal affairs, by mainly focusing on the indicators used in Goverment Monthly Economic Report and the System of National Accounts (SNA).
By this, to aquire the essential ability to write Master Thesis for the time being. After finishing the course, to aquire the ability to utilize for the evryday work at the company.

【Schedule】

Following 15 lectures will be given;

-1 Introduction to whole lectures and economic indicators: taking GDP as an example. Also, the economic impact of COVID-19 and policy responses are overviewed.
-2 Planning, coordination and decision process of economic and fiscal policy
-3 Planning, coordination and decision process of monetary policy and recent monetary policy
-4 Foundations of digital economy and government policy as a structural polocy
-5 Statistical methods, public opinion surveys
-6 Method of making statistics, statistical institutions
-7 Short-term economic analysis by GDP Quarterly Estimates(QE) No.1: foundations for various areas
-8 Short-term economic analysis by QE No.2: private demand
-9 Short-term economic analysis by QE No.3: public and overseas demand
-10 Other indicators No.1: on whole economy
-11 Other indicators No.2: private consumption, private investment, housing investment and public investment
-12 Other indicators No.3: export, import, company revenue, bankruptcy, labor market and prices
-13 Medium- and long-term economic analysis by SNA annual estimates: foundation, IS balance and public finance, saving rate of household, labor share, GDP by industries and GNI
-14 System of prefectural accounts, comparison of regional indicators
-15 (Special report) Various accounts of SNA and method of consolidating them

15stlecture is special report due to Olympic games. Economic influences due to COVID-19 and government measures against it are explained. At the last of each lecture, students would get data and depict graphs through PC by themselves.

【Instructional Methods】

Lectures are provided by using Power Point slides.
Students are required to submit a report within 3,000 Japanese characters from the list of several themes provided.

【Self-study before/after classes】

Self-study before classes: Please search questions and challenges concerning the themes of classes, by own business and activity.
Self-study after classes: Please think the influence and effect for own business and activity through the discussion.
Supposed time of study is about 30 to 60 minuetes for each. Postgraduates having their own business are reccomended to use the time of actual business and activity.

【Methods of Evaluation and Grading Criteria】

Please write a report at the end of the term. Evaluations are A(>80), B(.70), C(>60) and Failed(<60). S will be given when excellent.
