Objective understanding of target areas as a basis for preparing master's theses and research papers on specific subjects |
【Course Purpose and Description】 |
It is extremely important to understand regional trends from a multifaceted perspective at a time when regional depopulation is attracting much attention and there is a need for regional revitalization, and necessary measures can be guided through regional analysis. In particular, identifying issues through regional analysis is an important basis for making specific policy recommendations for specific regions in master's theses. On the other hand, there is a perception that "people who live or are involved in the community know the best about the community," so it is easy to assume that policies can be guided without the need for troublesome regional analysis. However, this is a misunderstanding, and only through objective regional analysis can the reality and characteristics of overlooked regions be revealed. And that is exactly what makes a master's thesis unique and effective policy recommendations. In this lecture, the goal is to introduce data and learn how to analyze it objectively, focusing on regional population trends, commuting and commuting, industrial structure, vacant houses, tourism, public facilities, and financial conditions. In particular, the Regional Economic Analysis System (RESAS) was developed as a means to promote regional revitalization, which made analysis much easier. Therefore, we conduct analysis using RESAS as much as possible (However, because RESAS offers less freedom in data processing, and because some data can not be analyzed by RESAS alone, we will also introduce data that is not available by traditional data acquisition methods or RESAS.). In addition, unique perspectives necessary for analysis and methods to avoid common misconceptions will be introduced as appropriate, and tips will be provided to give originality rather than end in mechanical regional analysis. In the second half of the lecture, the students conduct their own regional analysis and use it as the basis for their master's thesis and research thesis on specific subjects, as well as examining the role of the region through discussion among all students. |
【Learning Objectives】 |
Students will learn basic methods for conducting analysis (Population, industry, finance, etc.) based on their own awareness of issues in their community. Through the analysis of objective data and our unique analytical perspective, we can uncover aspects and issues of the region that have not been seen before. |
【Schedule】 |
1 Guidance: Understand the significance of regional analysis as an objective basis for policy formulation (2) Analysis of population structure and changes The present state and changes in the census population are analyzed by age group to explore the regional situation by age group (3) Analysis of transfers in and out: Exploring trends in settlement and migration in the region from the movement of the population of transfers in and out in the national census 4 Analysis of employees' attendance to school From the movement of employees and attendance in the national census, explore the situation of urban employment areas that capture interaction with other areas (5) Analysis of employment structure Explore the characteristics of employment opportunities and industries from the movement of the number of employees in the national census and the economic census. 6 Analysis by subregional unit A detailed analysis is conducted using data by town-street unit within a municipality 7 Other Statistical Analyses Keep track of other important statistics covering the municipality (8) Analysis of local government finances Exploring the soundness of local government finances using a survey of local government finances and a survey of public facilities 9 Display with map information Use GIS software for visual analysis and representation 10 Explore the overall picture of the region by mastering the circulation of the local economy and the summary function of RESAS 11 Case Studies Analyze a Specific Region Based on the Results of Previous Analyses 12 ~ 14 Student Analysis Presentations 15 Commentaries, Summary *With the development of the regional economic analysis system RESAS, analysis has become much easier. Therefore, analysis using RESAS is carried out as much as possible. However, when RESAS is not available, analysis methods using statistical data directly for deeper analysis are also presented. *Schedules may be adjusted according to the number of students. |
【Instructional Methods】 |
The lecture format is the basis for the 1st to the 11 and 15 series (questions can be asked at any time). From the 12 th to the 14 th, the students themselves will present the results of the analysis, followed by comments from the faculty and a question-and-answer session with all students. Also, for the second to fifth sessions, it's better to run the RESAS yourself, so bring a laptop with you. It is desirable for remote users to be able to operate the RESAS in parallel with the PC for instruction. |
【Self-study before/after classes】 |
Read the material published in Toyonet-Ace carefully in advance and be prepared for your own problem awareness regarding the presented analysis (30 minutes). Also, get the statistics introduced in the lecture materials on the website (60 minutes). Students will be asked to present their analysis in the 12 th to 14 th lectures, so they will conduct their own analysis after each lecture to prepare for the presentation. We recommend that adult graduate students also use time spent in actual practice or activity as an opportunity to explore tips for consideration (90 minutes). |
【Methods of Evaluation and Grading Criteria】 |
Based on the content of analysis presented by the trainees (A comprehensive evaluation of the accuracy, originality and future possibilities of problem awareness and analysis). S shall be no more than 5% of the students with 90 points or more. A must score at least 80 points, B must score at least 70 points, C must score at least 60 points, and less than 60 points must be rejected. |
【Pre-requisites】 |
Although there is nothing in particular, it is advisable to take related courses on how to use RESAS. |
【Textbooks】 |
Materials will be posted on manaba in advance. |
