【Sub-title】

Understanding the challenges of the Japanese economy and fiscal issues through reports and economic indicators, and grasping the total macroeconomic and structural policy.

【Course Purpose and Description】

By explaining how to use economic and fiscal indicators , acquire the foundation to utilize economic indicators and study the challenges of the Japanese economy and fiscal issues.
Indicators of prefectures and cities are also covered, if exist.
Systematic understanding of fiscal policy, monetary policy and structural policy including digital economy, carbon neutral and international economic policy.
For realizing these, lecturer will utilize the experience of economic and fiscal policy formulation in the Cabinet Office as far as possible.

【Learning Objectives】

To be able to fully utilize economic and fisal indicators related to the Japanese economy and fiscal affairs, by mainly focusing on the indicators used in Goverment Monthly Economic Report and the System of National Accounts (SNA).
By this, to aquire the essential ability to write Master Thesis. After finishing the course, to aquire the ability to utilize for the evryday work at the company.

【Schedule】

Following 15 lectures will be given. Students are sometimes required to draw tables and graphs on their PC.

-1 Introduction to the course and economic indicators: taking GDP as an example
-2 Statistical institutions
: survey methods, big-data, statistical institutions, public opinions survey,
-3 Statistiacl methods: seasonal adjustment, nominal and real, moving average, contribution to change, decomposition of factors, annual rate, carry over, elasticity, reactional movement, special facto
-4 Short-term economic analysis by GDP Quarterly Estimates (QE)
: private consumption, housing investment, corporate investment, private inventory, public investment, public consumption, net exports
-5 Medium- and long- term economic developments: IS balance, public finance including local government, social security sectors, saving rate of household, labor division rate, GDP by industry
-6 Other indicators
: Monthly Economic Report, consumption, investment, government sectors, exports and imports, employment, inflation, corporate profits and bankrupcy, indstrial prodcution, business survey
-7 Happiness, income distribution, and regional economy: hapiness indicators, Gini-coefficent, relative poverty rate, System of Prefectural Accounts
-8 Economic and Fiscal Policy: planning, coordination and decision process
-9 Monetary policy
: decision process of BOJ, function of BOJ, balance sheet of BOJ, credit creation by private banks, yield curve, non-traditional monetary policy

【Instructional Methods】

Lectures are provided by using Power Point slides.
Students are required to submit a report within 3,000 Japanese characters from the list of several themes provided.

【Self-study before/after classes】

Self-study before classes: Please search questions and challenges concerning the themes of classes, by own business and activity.
Self-study after classes: Please think the influence and effect for own business and activity through the discussion.
 Supposed time of study is about 30 to 60 minuets for each.  Postgraduates having their jobs are recommended to consider the themes in actual business activity.

【Methods of Evaluation and Grading Criteria】

Please write a report at the end of the term. Evaluations are A(>=80), B(>=70), C(>=60) and D(Failed: <60). S will be given when excellent.
