Cross-cultural Communication in a Global Society: From Theory to Practice

【講義の目的・内容】

As globalization advances, "intercultural" and "multicultural" have become commonplace in everyday conversations. This course explores contemporary issues related to a multicultural society. Through engaging in discussions and presentations, students will acquire practical knowledge, skills, and perspectives. The aim is to comprehend fundamental concepts and frameworks that facilitate effective communication in a global society. The interactive nature of the course, involving students from diverse cultural backgrounds, encourages a deeper understanding of different perspectives.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:
(1) Understand and apply the basic concepts of intercultural communication in everyday life;
(2) Examine and compare differences between Japanese culture and the behavior and values of other cultures;
(3) Raise awareness toward your cross-cultural competence.

【指導方法】

―The class is primarily designed for face-to-face interaction. However, we may incorporate on-demand classes on certain occasions throughout the semester.
―To access class materials and lectures, ToyoNet-ACE will be utilized, which includes the distribution of PDF files, Word files, and PowerPoint files, along with content available on YouTube. It is essential to have a device and internet setup compatible with these programs and file formats.
―The course employs four learning methods, all conducted in English: (1) Writing reports, (2) Reading materials, (3) Group discussions, and (4) Making presentations.
―The BEVI and IDI assessments are conducted twice – at the beginning and end of the course – to evaluate your cross-cultural competence objectively.

【事前・事後学修】

(1) Ensure all assigned readings and reflection posts are completed before the class. This typically requires approximately 60-90 minutes of preparation.
(2) Document your in-class accomplishments and submit weekly reflective posts on ToyoNet-ACE. This task typically takes around 30 minutes.

―IDI & BEVI participations: 10%
―Final Reflection Paper: 15%

【受講要件】

Course instruction is predominantly conducted in English. As a prerequisite, a minimum English proficiency of TOEIC 500 (TOEFL iBT 52, Eiken 2級) or above is required for enrollment in this course.

Necessary course materials and documents will be distributed during class sessions. You are expected to read all assigned articles and/or book chapters to actively engage in class activities.
